Terraria Crossplay: Cross-Platform Play Explained

terraria

Though it’s a unique game in its own right, it’s not wrong to call Terraria the Minecraft of 2D games. It’s an action-adventure game that people enjoy both alone and with friends, and its sandbox world beautifully rewards creativity.

Whether it’s the crafting, exploration, painting, building, combat, or mods – Terraria is a game that offers an endless amount of entertainment. And since it’s available on so many different gaming platforms, it’s one of the most accessible games that have existed in recent times.

Naturally, the age of purchasing the same platform as your friend to play online multiplayer with them is long gone. And this raises the question of is Terraria cross platform?

After all, every game in 2022 should offer players the ability to play with each other irrespective of what gaming machine that they’re on. So, let’s look into the official sources and answer the “is Terraria cross platform?” question!

Cross-Platform Multiplayer Explained

If you don’t know what crossplay means, let’s take a short moment to explain what crossplay is in video games. If you already know what it means, then simply scroll down to the next section for the main answer.

In the previous generations of gaming, every player was limited specifically to the platform that they owned in terms of gaming. Someone on an Xbox 360 was unable to play with someone on a PlayStation 3 or PC – and they had to play on the same platform as their friends if they wanted to enjoy multiplayer.

Fortunately, most major companies in 2022 have started implementing crossplay multiplayer in their video games, even if the games are old. This is allowing gamers to experience multiplayer with their friends on any platform without any additional hassles or waste of money. For example, with cross-platform multiplayer, you can play a game on a PlayStation 4 and have fun with your friends even if they are on a PC or Xbox One.

So, the question “is Terraria cross platform” means to ask if you can play the game with your friends on different consoles. If the answer to “is Terraria cross platform” is yes, then it means you can enjoy the game with your friends on any platform. So, let’s look at whether Terraria is cross platform or not right away.

Is Terraria Crossplay?

A game like Terraria would benefit greatly from crossplay since online multiplayer is one of the best features of the game.

Unfortunately, Terraria does not have crossplay. Whether you play Terraria on a PC or gaming consoles, it does not have cross-platform multiplayer. And you are limited to playing the game with only the people who have the same machine as you.

The only form in which Terraria features crossplay multiplayer is the mobile version of the game. The Android and iOS versions of Terraria can play online against each other, which means that you don’t have to worry about your friend using a different phone to yours. But sadly this privilege is unavailable on the console versions of the game.

One similar feature that the console versions of Terraria does have is cross-generation multiplayer. Which means that people playing on one generation of a console, such as PlayStation 4, can play online multiplayer with those on a PlayStation 5. The same also applies to people on an Xbox One, as they can easily play with someone on an Xbox Series X/S. All thanks to backwards compatibility. This also includes the PS3 version of the game, as it has crossplay with PS Vita.

Is Terraria Cross Platform?

The phrases ‘Is Terraria crossplay’ and ‘is Terraria cross platform’ mean the same thing. They are just different ways of referring to cross functionality, as one refers to platforms and the other one is more about playing.

The answer remains the same, Terraria does not feature cross platform multiplayer. It only features crossplay between the Android and iOS versions of the game and nothing else. Though it does have cross-generation multiplayer between 8th and 9th generation of the same brand.

Is Terraria Mobile Crossplay?

The answer to this question can be split into two. Firstly, the mobile version of Terraria does not have crossplay multiplayer with the console and PC versions of the game.

Secondly, the mobile version of Terraria does have crossplay between the mobile versions of the game. Which are the Android and iOS platforms.

Does Terraria have cross-progression?

Terraria does not feature cross-progression. So, anything you do on one version of Terraria is limited to that. And you cannot move that progress to any other platform.

There are fan tools by that can move progress between certain platforms. But it’s unstable and difficult to set up for the most part. Plus, it does not cover every single version either. So, looking for those mods is not very beneficial unless you’re good with technical things.

So, is Terraria cross platform? It’s sadly not. And is it cross-progression? Also not. It’s a self-contained game on every device.

Is Terraria Crossplay with PS4 and Xbox One?

As explained above, sadly the answer to ‘is Terraria cross platform’ is no. You cannot play Terraria’s multiplayer between the PS4 and Xbox One. The same applies to the PC version of the game too.

Is Terraria PC Crossplay?

The answer to “is Terraria cross platform on PC” is unfortunately no. Like any other version of the game, Terraria is not cross platform on the PC platform either. So, if you play Terraria on PC, you can’t play with someone on a PS4 or Xbox One.

However, if for any reason you play Terraria’s mobile version using an emulator on PC, you can then play it with other people who play the mobile port.

Do people still play Terraria on PS3?

From the looks of it, the PlayStation 3 version of Terraria does not seem to be offline. However, when you try to find any active players, it’s very hard to come across anyone. So, if you want to play Terraria multiplayer on PS3, you’d need to get some friends to join you. Because you might not run into any players online otherwise.

The same goes for the PS Vita and Xbox 360 versions of the game. Especially since the former is crossplay with the PS3 version.

Where can I play Terraria?

Terraria is currently available on the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, iOS, Android, Linux, Windows Phone, and macOS.

That is surely a very long list of platforms that the game is available on. And it does make sense that they are not crossplay with each other since it would take too much time and effort to make that work. Because they are all developed with the limitations of the respective systems in mind. And it would be counterproductive to nerf any of them into lesser games just to give cross platform multiplayer.

If you’re wondering “is Terraria cross platform?” on these consoles – sadly it is not.

Is Terraria dead?

Terraria may not have many players on its 7th generation ports – but every modern-day version of the game is very much alive. It’s a very popular game and if you pick it up on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Android, or iOS, you’ll run into hundreds of players with ease.

The game may not be as big as PUBG or Fortnite, but that does not change the fact that it’s a very active game with lots of content and a large player-base.

Is Terraria free?

No, Terraria is not a free game. Even the Android version of Terraria is paid and cannot be accessed for free.

Will Terraria get crossplay?

At the moment, there are no plans to add cross platform multiplayer to Terraria. This is because despite the game’s success, it’s not as large as something like Fortnite. So, the developers did not plan to add such a complex feature to the game. Because it will take a lot of time, effort, and money.

It makes more sense when you consider the fact that the developers of Terraria have called their updates to the game the ‘final’ one a couple of times. However, they still came back and released more content due to how popular the game is. So, it’s evident that they wish to stop releasing content. And with that in mind, something significant like crossplay is not on the table.

If Terraria gets crossplay, it would have to be on a new edition that hypes older players to come back again. Or, a sequel like Terraria 2 might have crossplay from the very beginning. Especially since there are not that many platforms at a time anymore, like how we used to have handheld consoles back in the days.

So, the answer to ‘is Terraria cross platform’ is sadly no and will remain that way. It won’t change until the game gets a massive remaster/remake or a sequel.

But one way or another, if anything does change, we will let you know right away by updating this guide!

Will there be a Terraria 2?

Terraria 2 is not officially confirmed yet. However, the lead developer of Terraria, Andrew “Redigit” Spinks has teased some early Terraria 2 concept art with fans.

Not much is known about the game at the time. And we don’t even know how far into development it is. But fans should be able to expect news sometime soon since Terraria was originally released in 2011. So, after a decade of success, a sequel is more than likely to happen.

Fortunately, if the sequel does come out, the answer to “is Terraria cross platform” might become yes. Because it will release on modern-day platforms and there are only a few these days to program crossplay functionality in.
